This course is intended for experienced operators and support staff who wish to further their knowledge. The course comprehensively details the tools available for diagnosing and resolving problems including system logs, job logs, messages, SRCs, System Service Tools (SST). Managing operational problems (job, save, restore, locks, security, perfomance problems and system, disk, power failures/problems). Managing TCP/IP, use FTP and advanced Navigator functions (DB, IFS, file shares, copying and distributing files, monitoring tools, SQL Assist etc.) and operational tasks from the HMC are all covered.
Ideally delegates will have attended the Operations course (ISOPS) or have equivalent hands on experience.
• Objects and libraries in detail
• Using the Integrated File System (IFS) effectively
• How TCP/IP works
• Managing TCP/IP and TCP/IP servers
• Troubleshooting TCP/IP problems
• Using Telnet
• FTP files and other object types
• Copy database files to PC files
• Run SQL scripts using SQL Assist
• How to create, use and manage directories and objects in directories
• How to create, use and manage file shares and mapped network drives
• Manage Netserver
• Use the tools for sending data to one or more servers in Navigator
• An introduction to diagnosing problems – methods of approach
• Use the problem log and history log effectively
• In depth detail on system messages
• Track down and analyse job logs to resolve problems
• Ad Hoc tools to assist in troubleshooting (e.g. tracing jobs, copy screens etc.)
• In depth look at System Service Tools (SST) and Dedicated Service Tools (DST) – (Error logs, hardware service manager, traces etc.)
• Create and manage service tools user id’s, password policies etc.
• Manage disk units with SST
• Diagnose and manage job problems (runaway jobs, jobs hung or running slowly, looping programs, the WRKSYSACT command etc.)
• Diagnose and manage save/restore problems (objects not saved, target release, saving access paths, failed restores, sequence for restoring etc.)
• Diagnose and manage security/performance problems (authority problems with objects and the IFS, deal with system performance problems etc.)
• How to deal with object locks
• How to change command defaults
• Dealing with damaged objects and dumping an object
• Dealing with and recovering from system failures
• Understanding System Reference Codes (SRCs)
• Detail the disk storage components
• How to manage and recover from disk failures, disk status definitions
• How to monitor and manage disk storage capacity problems
• Detail the Front Control Panel functions
• Power problems
• Use Navigator to automate the monitoring of system resources (e.g. CPU, disk storage, disk i/os, response times, comm’s line utilisation etc.)
• Generate resource utilisation reports
• Use Navigator to automate the monitoring of jobs, messages and files
• Collect performance data with collection services
• Introduction to and navigate around the HMC
• Detail the different types of HMC
• HMC user IDs and task roles
• Manage servers and logical partitions from the HMC
• Troubleshooting system problems from the HMC
We recommend that after a suitable period of time of attending this course (e.g. 3 to 6 months hands on experience) then delegates may want to enhance the knowledge they have gained on this course by attending the System Management and Administration course (ISADM).
