System i (AS/400, iSeries, i5) RPG Subfile Programming

Course Outline

This course is intended for RPG programmers either coding with RPGLE or RPG methods developing applications which require multiple records to be displayed, paged through and interfaced with other applications, known as subfiles. The course covers the definition of a data subfile, error message subfile and all subfile keywords. By the end of the course you will have coded a load-all, expanding, single page and data entry subfile program and be able to identify and choose the right subfile for an application.

Pre-requisites

Delegates should attend the RPGIV Programming (ISR4P) or RPG/400 programming (ISRPP) course followed by a period of practical work in RPG development prior to attending this course, or have the equivalent hands on experience. Delegates must have a good practical knowledge of SDA, PDM and SEU and the fundamentals of programming in RPG.

•Subfile loading techniques and structure
   • Load All
   • Expanding (Page by Page)
   • Single Page
• Using SDA to code subfile record formats
• Selecting the main record level keywords
   • SFLCTL, SFLDSP, SFLDSPCTL,
   • SFLCLR, SFLEND, SFLSIZ, SFLPAG
• Coding a ‘load-all’ structured subfile program
• Using the page control key-words: SFLRCDNBR, SFLSCROLL
• All subfile format and control format keywords
• Conversion of ‘load-all’ DDS for expanding logic
• Coding an expanding (page by page) structured subfile program
• Plus sign control
• Conversion of expanding DDS for single page logic
• Coding a single page subfile program
• Data entry subfile functionality
• Data entry subfile program code and logic
• Error message subfile definition
• Adding, Removing and Displaying messages with an error message subfile

Follow-On

To complete training in RPGLE, the Advanced programming course (ISR4A) should be considered. Also, Embedded SQL (ISSQE) and possibly ILE Fundamentals (ISILE). Note: the Interactive SQL (ISSQI) is a pre-requisite for Embedded SQL (ISSQE).
