This course introduces you to the Java programming language and the Java platform you use to develop Java programs. It discusses the syntax and semantics of the Java programming language, by comparing the features in RPG for which you are already familiar. While this is an intense course, you may find after you are finished that Java isn't so new and different as you might expect.
On completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Write modular programs in WebSphere Studio Application Developer using the Java language and related technologies
- Understand and use object oriented principles such as inheritance, polymorphism, and encapsulation.
- Identify the key structural components of Java and RPG IV.
- Write Java code to store and manipulate data using Java data structures and types.
- Create a simple graphical user interface (GUI) in Java with basic graphical components.
- Use the key iSeries toolbox for Java classes to access data queues, programs, and databases.
- Use Java Native Interface to call Java code from an RPG program and RPG code from a Java program.
Experienced i5(iSeries) programmers proficient in the RPG IV language.
Before attending this course, the student should be able to:
- Write complex RPG IV programs employing full database access.
- Describe the basic concepts of ILE and modular program design
- Use the full range of Websphere Development Studio tools, (PDM, SE, CODE, SDA, etc.)
- Use the client-based programming tools, CODE and WDSc
Familiarity with objected oriented concepts is desirable but not mandatory.
- Overview of Java.
- General Comparison of Java with RPG.
- Java Language Syntax.
- Structured Operations and Statements
- Data Types.
- Arrays, Vectors, and Hashtables.
- Strings.
- Date and Time Manipulation.
- Object Orientation: Encapsulation, Inheritance, and Polymorphism
- Exceptions.
- Threads.
- User Interface.
- Database Access
- Additional Topics: Inner Classes, Java Native Interface, System Properties.
Please note:
The course will NOT provide you with a complete set of skills to become an accomplished Java programmer. However, it will provide an effective introduction to the language by contrasting with the RPG IV experience you already possess. Follow-on study will be necessary to become a proficient Java programmer.
